What is LADY all about?

Picture
The Leadership and Action for Determined Youth (LADY) conference is an initiative launched by a group of undergraduate students passionate about supporting the future generation of women leaders in Japan.

At its core, the LADY program is designed with the goal to challenge participants to explore their own path to leadership and success by learning about and applying critical thinking skills to obstacles of pursuing an educational and professional career as a woman in today’s Japan, as well as by connecting with and establishing a community of supportive peers and mentors.

Mentors

In addition to the organizational committee comprised of undergraduate students, the LADY conference involves a group of college-age mentors, both from Japan and the United States, who will be present to advise and share insights and experiences with participants. Throughout the program, high school participants will be able to connect with these mentors both professionally and personally through workshops and other interaction opportunities.

Workshops

Throughout the LADY conference, participants will be able to partake in workshops that are run by both mentors and guests on a variety of topics. Workshops will typically begin with an introduction to a topic, followed by small group discussions to explore the topic in depth.

Examples of workshops include the College & Careers workshop which will prepare participants for the challenges in pursuing higher education, Women and Gender, a workshop about different perspectives on being a woman in Japan and Women in the Media, a workshop about how women are represented in certain ways all around us in media and popular culture. The workshops are supposed to be both educational and engaging, and have in common that they emphasize participants independence and critical thinking.

Speakers

The LADY conference will also feature a variety of accomplished women as guest speakers who will share their stories of being successful in diverse fields ranging from academia to business. Through learning of their stories, participants will both get a sense of the many ways one can go about to achieve goals as well as learn practical tips.

About Family Groups

In order for participants to develop meaningful relationships during the short duration of the program, all high school participants and college students are assigned to a small group called a “Family”. Participants will spend the majority of the time with their Family and engage in discussions and workshops. Of course, there are changes to meet peers and mentors outside of your assigned Family!
